Preparedness True preparedness starts with a fresh approach to the idea that "life brings change." Here at Pockets of the Future, we like to think of preparedness not as a wall to be erected against change and dislocation but rather as a provisioning that will give rise to flexibility in our adaptation to a new future. A new future could range from job loss/job change, moving from the city to the country, the birth of a baby, a reordering of priorities for spiritual reasons, all the way to frank, systemic economic dislocation or natural disaster. In any case, one or more of these things will come into the lives of all of us. Let's be reasonably prepared as far as the basics of every day life are concerned. Let's prepare to adapt to a new future. ^^^^^^ Suppliers AAOOB Storable Foods - Long Term Storage Foods and Emergency Supplies for Every Budget - Here you can buy foods, camping equipment, mills of all kinds, non-hybrid seeds, stoves, water equipment and more. What I really appreciate on this site, and what I read first, were the carefully written pages on food. The pages on bread making tips and bean information are just great. Lehman's - Established in 1955, Lehman's caters primarily to Amish and Mennonite customers. But their products are also wonderful for the rest of us. Find all sorts of goods for living off the grid, putting up food in the kitchen, farming and much more. Their focus isn't on preparedness per se but rather on the simple life as they know it. Nice atmosphere and great products. USA Emergency Supply - I found this site when looking for a better price on Gamma Lids. Carries a full range of food storage, self-sufficiency and emergency supplies. No intense philosophy - just information. Great prices and a good list of books for sale. Walton Feed - This business has been around for over 50 years and is one of the most well known for information, bulk food orders and for selling high quality dehydrated foods as well as many other emergency supplies. I have lived in several places where families got together and put in really huge orders from Walton Feed for grains and beans and so on in order to receive an appreciable discount. I have often come to this site to study the in's and out's of food storage and planning. They say their dehydrated foods are often cheaper than grocery store food so this may be worth looking into just for living within your current budget as well as for provisioning for a changing future. ^^^^^^ Information and Discussion BuildanArk.net - This site is still under construction but what is there so far is so inspiring and informative that it is worth going through page by page. There are tutorials on how to make and do all sorts of useful things with wonderful photographs to make it all larger than life. John Maniatty has a gentle sense of humor and clear way of explaining things that lets you believe that you can do and make and be more self-reliant also. Frugal Squirrels - An information packed forum written by people who are actively practicing what they preach covering a range of interesting subjects such as self sufficiency, alternative energy, food production and recipes, frugality, survival medicine. There is also a store on this web site with further information. The Gentle Survivalist - This web site presents preparedness as one aspect of finding inner balance and peace. It embraces people of all faiths and talks about tolerance and respect. The site includes writings on ancient wisdom, natural living, indigenous foods, simplicity, chemical sensitivities and vegetarianism. I appreciate the unusual combination of topics and open atmosphere here. Mrs. Survival - A forum and preparedness information for women dedicated to becoming ever more able to provide their families with healthy food, warm clothes and beauty even in the face of adversity. Ol' Buffalo - Many Mormons are very expert on all aspects of being prepared with basic necessities for their families. This web site showcases that expertise. Over 30 categories of information with each category filled with links, articles, quotes and books on that particular subject. (The quotes are great, by the way.) This site is very extensive and provides a solid jumping off point for learning about any area of preparedness. The Survival Report Blog - We discovered this blog through stumbling upon a video on You Tube about keeping bees for honey. Good down to earth information and links. Apparently this man is controversial because he recommends against stockpiling gold. As this is certainly not an issue for us, we are perfectly comfortable! Viking Preparedness - Wilderness Survival, Family Preparedness, Security - There are a number of aspects of "preparedness" to which we do not subscribe. We are not interested in guns or ammunition and we do not have caches of grain secreted away anywhere. Such things are discussed on this blog but so are lots of other things in which we are very interested, i.e. bees, goats, the development of more self-sufficient lifestyles and so on. I find many of the posts here funny and compelling. You can also go to the associated Viking Preparedness Forum for even more information.
