Passing the Time Together

Chess Kids Academy - You can find here an interactive course for children on how to play chess, and chess quizzes, games, and puzzles. Children can play against the computer as well as download free books about chess. Everything you need to run a chess club is included on this award winning web site as well.

Family Pastimes - This is an information site describing the wonderful games made by this Canadian family. All of the games foster cooperative behavior and sharing in addition to providing opportunities to play at facing the challenges of mountains, the passing of time or the bites of insects. We have several of these games and love them. The games themselves are colorful and modestly made by hand in small quantities. There are games for every age group including adults. It is nice to know that when you put one of these in your children's hands or play together as a family, there is nothing to guard against or explain away and everyone will probably still be happy afterwards. This site will tell you where you can buy their games locally.

Land of Marbles - Do you remember playing marbles when you were a kid? Do your children know how? Go to this site for marbles, the rules for how to play and more marble related information than you thought even existed. Laughter and the chink of marbles clicking against each other would be pleasant sounds indeed some day when the power is out.

Simply Music - Billed as a breakthrough in music education, Simply Music teaches how to play the piano in an entirely new way that has students playing real music immediately. This new approach teaches piano skills in the same order that children learn language skills. Our oldest musician daughter is working her way through this program and loves it. What sweeter way to pass time together as a family than gathering around the piano for a sing?

The Toymaker - This site provides the patterns for incredibly beautiful paper toys. You just print them out and put them together. Print out several ahead of time and have them to enjoy together no matter what the weather. All you need is scissors and glue. There are also some beautifully illustrated "Firelight Stories" you can download for free.
