Chestnut Dishes Chestnuts have a long and interesting history which you can read about here. Historically chestnuts were a food of the poor before the introduction of the potato and have served as a staple food of mountain people for centuries. They have been planted in certain areas to ward off food shortages and have even been used as a form of currency. Chestnuts are a versatile food with a similar nutritional value to brown rice. Some people even refer to them as "grain on trees". As they are more similar to a starchy vegetable than a real nut, they can be cooked in myriad ways including everything from soups and stuffings to breads, vegetable side dishes and elegant desserts. They add minerals and a new flavor to gluten free diets. We have chestnut trees growing in our yard and harvest over 35 pounds of chestnuts from them. If you don't happen to have your own trees, Delmarvelous Farms and Allen Creek Farm are two American sources for excellent chestnuts. Their sites also have preparation and storage instructions, recipes and other pertinent information. ggggg
